Expert Care That Grows With Your Child

As a parent, you want the best for your child. And that includes dental care, too. That’s why, at Mission Bay Dental, we offer a full range of pediatric dental services for kids of all ages. From infants and toddlers to older children, preteens, and teenagers, we’ll be here for your child during every step of their dental journey.

With Dr. Nancy Ly, Dr. Jane Choi, and our team of dentists on your side, you can set your child up for a lifetime of healthy smiles. We offer expert preventive treatment and an education-focused approach that helps both parents and kids learn more about the importance of proper oral hygiene and dental care.

When Should My Child Start Seeing The Dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that children have their first dental visit when their first tooth comes out or when they turn 12 months old, whichever comes first. This may seem early, but the sooner you start familiarizing your child with the dentist, the easier it will be to manage their dental care as they grow!

Don’t worry, though. If your child is a little bit older and still hasn’t been to the dentist, now is the best time to start. At Mission Bay Dentistry, we offer family-friendly care in a comfortable environment. Get in touch today to book your child’s first dental visit and see what makes Mission Bay Dental such a great place for kids of all ages.

Our Pediatric Dentistry Services At Mission Bay Dental

Led by Dr. Nancy Ly and Dr. Jane Choi, the dentists at Mission Bay Dental love treating children of all ages. As part of our mission to provide superior pediatric dental care in San Francisco, we offer a wide variety of dental services.

Six-month exams and cleanings with EMS Airflow

Six-month checkups and oral exams are at the heart of what we do at Mission Bay Dental. With regular checkups, your child’s dentist can make sure your child’s mouth is healthy, reduce their risk of cavities and gum disease, and keep an eye on their oral development.

We offer kid-friendly cleanings, too. We use EMS Airflow units for Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT). This is an alternative to traditional rubber cup brushes and metal instruments used in dental cleanings. EMS Airflow is touch free, and uses a mixture of air, water, and fine particles to clean your child’s teeth. This makes dental cleanings a lot more comfortable for kids!

Fluoride treatments and dental sealants

We offer fluoride treatments for children who need a little more help fighting back against cavities. In this treatment, your child’s dentist will paint a fluoride-rich solution onto their teeth, then leave it in place for a few minutes before rinsing it away. This attracts minerals to their enamel, strengthening their teeth and reducing the risk of cavities.

Dental sealants are also a good option for cavity-prone kids. In this process, your child’s dentist will apply a thin layer of clear liquid resin to their teeth, then harden it with a UV light. This forms a strong protective layer that protects against the food particles, acid, and bacteria that cause cavities.

Education and at-home hygiene recommendations

Great oral health starts at home. Whether you have questions about how to care for your child’s teeth or they need advice on how to brush more effectively on their own, the dentists at Mission Bay Dental are here for you.

We focus on educating both children and their parents on how to properly care for their smiles. Not only that, but we take the time to get to know you and your kids, and provide personalized advice based on your child’s lifestyle, habits, medical history, and more.

Jaw growth evaluations

As your child grows, their jaw and facial structure will change quite a bit, especially during the first 4-6 years. At Mission Bay Dental, our dentists will keep a close eye on your child’s facial structure, jaws, and bite as they grow. This allows us to look for any signs of developmental issues and recognize them early, if present.

Then, if we notice any issues with your child’s jaw growth and development, we can refer your little one to an orthodontic specialist for treatment. Early intervention can help ensure proper oral development and reduce the need for braces and other orthodontic treatments in your child’s teenage years, too.

Myofunctional therapy

We also offer myofunctional therapy to help children who need help correcting unhealthy oral movement patterns. For example, if your child tends to breathe through their mouth (open mouth posture) or has trouble swallowing correctly (reverse swallow), these issues can cause serious issues with their oral development over time.

With a combination of at-home exercises, in-office myofunctional therapy, and lifestyle changes, the team at Mission Bay Dental can help you and your little one overcome a wide variety of orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs).
