Preserving Teeth With Biomimetic Dentistry

Our Minimally Invasive Approach To Dental Restorations

At Mission Bay Dental, biomimetic dentistry is at the heart of what we do. Dr. Nancy Ly and Dr. Jane Choi have both completed Masterships in biomimetic dentistry and have years of experience restoring decayed and damaged teeth with lifelike, biocompatible restorations.

With biomimetic dentistry in San Francisco, the team at Mission Bay Dental can maintain more of your natural tooth structure, reduce the need for root canals, and ensure that you can smile proudly for years to come.

What Is Biomimetic Dentistry?

Biomimetic dentistry is an alternative approach to traditional methods of restoring damaged and decayed teeth. It focuses on preserving as much of your natural tooth structure as possible and using minimally invasive strategies to restore damaged teeth.

What does that actually mean? Here’s an example. If you have a deep or large cavity, a traditional dentist may recommend that you get a dental crown to restore your smile and tooth. But when you get a dental crown, lots of your natural tooth structure will need to be removed along with the unhealthy parts of your tooth.

This must be done to make room for your new crown, even if some of the tooth material is still perfectly healthy. In turn, this can lead to a higher risk of complications, like a higher likelihood of tooth infection and the need to perform a root canal if the dental crown fails in the future.

In biomimetic dentistry, a minimally invasive approach is used. Rather than removing lots of tooth material and placing a dental crown to treat a decayed tooth, a biomimetic dentist like Dr. Ly or Dr. Choi will remove as little tooth material as possible. Then, they will rebuild your tooth structure using multiple layers of composite dental materials.

The result is a strong, lifelike dental restoration that’s bonded tightly to your natural enamel, and preserves as much of your natural tooth structure as possible.

The Benefits Of Biomimetic Dentistry

Preserve more natural tooth structure

You only get one set of teeth, and preserving them is our top priority at Mission Bay Dental. With biomimetic dentistry, our dentists can preserve more of your natural tooth structure. In turn, this helps protect your teeth from future decay and damage.

Reduce the need for root canal therapy

Traditional dentists often go overboard when it comes to recommending root canal therapy. In many cases, it’s possible to avoid the need for root canals by using biomimetic dentistry techniques. And even in cases where your tooth is infected, our dentists may be able to use alternative techniques like pulp capping and pulpotomies to restore your tooth.

Durable and lifelike restorations

Biomimetic dentistry uses materials that imitate the natural properties of your teeth. Not only are these materials very strong, but they also behave more like your natural tooth structure. This enhances their durability, especially when compared to ceramic and metal dental restorations.
